Volunteer - for all the right reasons!
Observations on volunteering at ACAC, from Polly Miller; Volunteer, Shelter Partner
Is it your New Year’s resolution to get more exercise? Did you get a new FitBit and are now on the quest to reach those 10,000 steps a day? If you become a volunteer at Amador County Animal Control & Adoption Center, you could accomplish these goals, plus more.
I have been a volunteer for six months and I love it. After training, I started as a substitute walker, filling in whenever someone was on vacation. It was a great way to see this program in action. I now walk dogs every Saturday during the morning shift. I am not sure who enjoys it more; me, or the dogs! During our walks we practice good leash etiquette and I give them a lot of positive reinforcement. I have walked big dogs, small dogs and every size in between. There are young dogs and senior dogs that just want to be loved.
All the volunteers celebrate when one of “our” animals is adopted. E-mails circulate as we tell each other about the most recent adoptions. It is such a wonderful feeling to be a part of finding loving homes for some great animals.
Interested in volunteering, but can’t walk dogs? Volunteer for a three hour clerical shift, participate in our adoption outreach program, or make yourself available to socialize dogs and cats by visiting with them, giving them much-needed human interaction. It may not satisfy your FitBit, but it will do the animals 10,000 steps worth of good.
One thing for sure: volunteering at the Shelter is one of the most rewarding things I have done.
You can view or print a Volunteer Application from the Amador County Website HERE. The county requires that applications be submitted on pink paper, so you will need to pick up an original at Amador County Animal Control and Adoption Center, 12340 Airport Road, in Martell. They’ll point you through the process.
