Hoarding Cats - a Cautionary Message
This story, from January of this year, provides us with a compelling cautionary tale on the importance of spaying and neutering our pets. Currently, the number of cats (still being captured) has exceeded 30, and it all started only TWO YEARS AGO with ONE pregnant female. EVICTION REVEALS CAT HOARDING
JANUARY 6, 2015: While serving an eviction notice, the Amador County Sheriff’s Office enlisted the assistance of Amador County Animal Control when they discovered over 25 cats living in deplorable conditions. Two of these cats are people-friendly, but extremely thin and now being cared for by animal shelter staff.
The remainder of these cats will be going to A-PAL Humane Society for evaluation and placement. After living in filth, the cats will need time and care to determine the best option for their futures, whether it be as a barn cat or a pet.
Because of their unfortunate situation and number, they will need to be trapped. These frightened cats scattered as they were approached, so their temperament and compatibility with humans is unknown.
These cats will be in the care of A-PAL for some time to determine their medical conditions and personalities. This will put a strain on an already tight budget for A-PAL Humane Society. They are asking for the public’s assistance.
A-PAL Humane Society President Susan Manning explained that their budget is strained because this past year, more cats than ever have come in. Also, A-PAL is called when adoptable shelter animals need medical care and the number of those animals was greater.
Susan stressed that in circumstances like this, A-PAL Humane Society really needs help from the public to save these cats. Money will be needed for veterinary care, and humane homes where people are willing to provide food and shelter are needed. A-PAL will even bring the cats to you.
If you can provide a humane home for feral or semi-feral cats, please call Jeff Holman at 209-304-0928. These cats will be spayed or neutered and will have had a rabies vaccination plus services appropriate for their condition.
If you would like to donate money to assist A-PAL with the care and placement of these cats, please send a check to P.O. Box 190, Jackson, Ca. 95642 or visit www.pawspartners.org.
