How to keep Coyotes & Foxes away

Coyotes and foxes are beneficial predators who keep rodents and other mammals such as skunks, and raccoons in check.  They help maintain a healthy ecosystem and species diversity.

That said, they are the top carnivore in some ecosystems and can be a danger to our pets.  Here are some tips to keep them both away:

  • NEVER feed a coyote or fox
  • Do not keep pet food outside
  • Clean your grill after use or store it in the garage
  • Cover and secure your trash and put it out the morning of pick up
  • Do not add meat or bones to your compost pile
  • Pick up any fallen fruit from trees daily
  • Keeping cats indoors always is best, but at least from dusk to dawn when coyotes are most active
  • Pick up pet feces
  • Do not leave dogs tied up outside, especially small dogs
  • HAZE THEM, if coyotes or foxes come near, wave your arms and shout and make them unwelcome. Link to hazing
  • Install fence 6 feet tall or taller.  Rollers on top of fencing are helpful too.  Here is a link to fence top rollers.  Link to rollers

Remember- we need these predators to keep the balance of nature, so killing is never the answer.  For assistance or answers to questions, please call 209-283-3245
