They are called ground squirrels because they live on the ground and in burrows rather than in trees like our Western Gray Tree Squirrel. Thank you for making this such an awesome post!

Rodents and other small wild mammals are often considered to be pests and vectors for disease in zoos that house small populations of valuable threatened and endangered animals. Thank you for taking the time to write a great post!

The California Ground Squirrel's proper name is Spermophilus beecheyi, and nicknamed Beechey Ground Squirrel, named after Frederick William Beechey. Thank you for the beautiful post!

As is typical for ground squirrels, California ground squirrels live in burrows, which they excavate themselves. I truly appreciate your great post!
